Sunday Jazz
Don had a good afternoon yesterday. His daughters drove into town in the morning, and his son Tom arrived yesterday afternoon. After a rough morning, he was lucid and talkative later on and had a good visit with them.
With their arrival, Vickie was able to take a break from the hospital room yesterday afternoon and join Bobby and me at the 4th Street Theatre, attached to Java Joe's Coffeehouse, to see Dan's new jazz combo do their first show.

The two sax players and the drummer are triplets who live in north suburban Johnston; and their father and uncle are local professional musicians. The keyboard player is from Waukee, so it widens Dan's circle of musicians.

The setting was a regular Sunday afternoon jazz session. Each session is opened by a "showcase" band, and this band - as yet unnamed, I think - was today's opener. After they were done, it was an open jam for anyone who signed up, and there were musicians from around the area there. Steve Charlson, maybe the best local professional bass player, was on hand to back up the jam session afterwards, and I'm glad Dan got to play for him.
I think they sounded good, especially considering that they've had limited time to practice together. Here is a 2+ minute clip, taken with my digital camera. We have the whole thing on camcorder for the day when I figure out how to upload Sony camcorder recordings to YouTube. The older guy is the triplets' uncle, who joined them for one number. (UPDATE: More on the older guy - Dan notes in the comments that he lives in New York, and seems to have recorded with people even more prominent than Dan...)
It was a great diversion from Don's health crisis, and I hope he might feel up to watching the recording sometime this week.

actually, dick oatts is from new york...
I'm so glad that this happened after you guys got back from your vacation. It would have been even worse if you had to rush back from Cape Cod.
Could Dan get some work as a session musician during the summer? He's pretty fab!
