Far work

I missed the California trip, but I am hale and hearty in time for the Minnesota trip. I drive up tonight with two colleagues to the Minnesota suburbs for two days of work. I get back Wednesday night. Thursday Dan and Vickie leave for a jazz competition in a Chicago suburb (Rolling Meadows) for a jazz competition. Rob and I will be batching it again. Oh, the parties we have... I hope the Chicago crew gets the chance to see him play -- I know he enjoyed seeing them last year.

Rob and I fended for ourselves much of this weekend while Vickie took Dan to Chicago for his DePaul auditions. Dan thinks it went well. Rob got to hang out at the office Saturday, lucky kid. Well, he had to do homework anyway, so it wasn't so bad. The 5th graders at this school have to do an "independent study" project report, in term paper format. Rob chose the not-very-narrow topic if medieval England, Scotland and Ireland, which he breezes through in 12 pages.

After work Saturday we drove a few blocks to the State Capitol, where the House leadership is holding a vote open that they took Friday. They came up one vote short of passing the measure, so they are refusing to close the vote until Monday afternoon in hopes of getting someone to switch. Meantime they have to keep the speaker's chair warm to hold the vote open, so they are having a weird vigil. Rob and I stopped in to view the spectacle for a few minutes.

That soon palled, so it was off to dinner, a long walk in the icy woods with the dog, who had been stuck home alone, and home to a warm cozy bed.

Wow, you really know how to have fun in Iowa. A vote is as near as an ATM here :)

I am not getting Vickie's e-mails. Could you send me the details on the visit this weekend? We would love to see Dan if possible.
