Big Boy

The Big Boy tour set up in Des Moines today. The Union Pacific restored a huge 1941 steam locomotive designed for mountain service in the west and is sending it around the railroad's territory to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the intercontinental railroad.

I took off work for a while this afternoon to see it. Unfortunately, a lot of other people had the same idea. After giving up on getting the car close, I parked at the state fairgrounds and followed the crowd, finding the train conveniently located behind a rendering plant. OK, not convenient. The U.P. marketing department loses points for this.

There was a line to get in, and one look told me I didn't have time to wait in it to get past the fence around the train. I settled for gawking at the behemoth through the fence and taking what pictures I could.

I wish I had seen it running. Dan did, it looks amazing.

It leaves town at 8:00 am tomorrow.
