Kayaks

I don't think I've mentioned our little vacation kayak adventure here. The boys and I rented kayaks for a little turn around Wellfleet Bay off Cape Cod. We had two kayaks - a two-manner, that Bobby rode with either Dan or me, and a single boat.

It started smoothly, as you can see from these pictures, but us Iowans didn't anticipate the wind and waves we ran into by noon. By the time we were heading in, the waves were crashing over the boats, and at one point Dan and Bobby were driven onto the beach by wind and tide. Dad switched boats, and using the wisdom accumulated by my more advanced years, and especially my extra 50 lbs, I was able to work with Bobby to get it back out to the bay so we could return to our beach.

We were then quite happy to return themand be done with kayaking.

IN OTHER NEWS

Don's memorial service here - really, more of a visitation or reception (his remains were cremated) will be at 11:00 next Saturday at Grace Methodist Church. There will be a service in Pengilly, MN, either late August or on September 8 (I think).

Dorothy spent a couple of nights at our house, and now she is back at home. Vickie is supposed to write the obituary and turn it in today. That's our Des Moines Register - you have to write the obits yourself, and then you have to pay for them if they are longer than 8 lines. Bah. I will link to the obituary when it's in the paper.

It is good that Dorothy had somewhere to go instead of having to go back to the empty house right away.

I can't believe The Register requires obituaries to be written by the family! Don't they have staff? I suppose in one sense, the family will get the name spelled correctly and all the information will be correct.

It's sad. The Register seems to want to go the way of the dodo bird. They don't call newspapers "dinosaur media" for nothing.
