Car shopping

As Dan's 16th birthday rapidly approaches, the issue of a car for him looms. In many ways it will be handy to have him self-propelled, but a teenager with a car is still a frightening prospect for a parent.

My plan had been to pass down my trusty 1997 Camry (109,000 miles and counting) and treat myself to a more recent model. But maybe there's a better way:

Yes, the AMC Gremlin! This rare survivor of the breed was spotted recently at the Dahls at Hickman and 86th. It has many of the features that made the Gremlin the prized car of my youth.

It has one wheel cover:

The original driver's side mirror has long since fallen off and has been replaced with a cheap aftermarket one:

And it has the sleek lines that just scream: "uh, no thanks, Dude, I'll walk."

Some of the features of the Gremlin can't be captured in photos - like the way it rattles loudly if you try to go faster than 65, and the way it stalls if you take a corner too fast. All in all, it has many good features for a teen car.

Unfortunately, misguided nostalgia has apparently made the Gremlin more expensive than one would hope. I would think: $400. But the only Gremlin on Cars.com has a sticker of (sit down...)

$17,995.

I'd rather walk, Dude.

Too funny! I thought the Gremlin had died a death, but no there it is. I was a proud owner of another fine AMC automobile, The Pacer. Perhaps you could find one of those for Dan.
