More Montezuma

Sometime when she was young, Vickie's grandmother moved with her family up the road from Montezuma to Brooklyn, Iowa.. Dorothy has said that her grandfather owned a bank in Montezuma that failed. I'm not sure when thes happened, or whether it was related to the move. In any case they lived in this house .

Our friend Peggy did a little googling on Montezuma and found a great series of old pictures - including another photo of the Heath house! Lots of slices of turn-of-the-century Iowa small town life.

It's a little puzzling why a small Iowa town would be named after a deposed Mexican god-king. As Iowa was settled during and after the Mexican War, many Iowa towns and counties are named after Mexican War battles (e.g. Palo Alto, Buena Vista) or generals (Winfield Scott, Zachary Taylor). If all the good battles were used up, maybe they did what they could.
