A refund for my 24 year-old self.
I don't get many letters from Southern Illinois, having moved out of there 30 years ago, so when this one showed up in my mailbox yesterday, I had to open it.
I know the letter is dated November 7, 2014. Even with a dying postal service, the mail isn't that slow. It was addressed to the apartment on Fuller Road where I lived when I moved here in 1985 from St. Louis ($340 per month!). That apparently slowed things, but they tracked me down here.
It's nice to get the check, but my 24-year old self would have really appreciated it more when I was a customer of CIPS, the predecessor of Egyptian Electric. I ran up the credits living in a 12-wide trailer as a graduate student in the SIU-C accounting department, living on a $500 monthly stipend. That electric bill was a big part of my budget. That was the year I experimented with freezing 99-cent Whoppers to stretch my food budget (fail). Better late than never.
"Congratulations! Below is a check for the distribution of your capital credits from 1983 and a partial distribution from 1984." (Click to enlarge)

Nice refund! You could have really used that money in 1985. I'm glad you've got it now. So, are you going to get new camping equipment? A new bike? Throw a great party?
Maybe I'll use it to rent the optional kilt when I go to my Edinburgh conference in May...
I can't wait to see you! I missed you when I was in Iowa in October. You would rock a kilt. £900 will just about cover it if you want to BUY one. Why not try renting?
