Documenting my rut

The life of the public accountant this time of year is every bit as exciting as you might dream it would be. It's interesting, in the way that working on difficult, varied obscure problems can be for a specialist. And while learning the latest colonoscopy techniques can be fascinating for a gastroenterologist, it is about as interesting to the non-specialist as the stuff I do.

To the extent what I do might have some interest to the non-specialist, it's on my tax blog. I try to make it interesting, but I realize that the latest tax news might be a bit dry for the normal reader. That's why I like to include photos in my posts, to at least make it visually interesting, if not otherwise.

When I finished up yesterday I decided that it would be a nice day to get some sort-of-downtown pictures. As I pulled out of the garage, I heard a train, so I had to chase it. I caught it!

Then I headed to the Southeast side industrial area. Did you know that Des Moines still has a working public horse watering trough? It's the last one of what had been a whole network of them. With the leaves gone, you can see the Capitol dome behind it.

And there were sledders on the hill south of the Capitol, making the best of the melting snow:

And the old Union Depot, a winter view:

And a little packing house:

And a locomotive!

Who says public accounting isn't full of thrills?

How many horse troughs are still around, let alone in working order? Shall we do a survey?

You need a vacation just exactly when you have the least amount of time in which to take one.

Peggy- How's this? I have a work trip to Edinburgh in May for a conference. Something to look forward to!

Tom - glad you enjoyed the tour. It's been too long -- I hope to give you one in person again sometime!
