Reflected Cubbie glory
My favorite Cubs blog, Bleacher Nation, had a post today asking fans for their favorite Cubs moment. A favorite in the comments was the Kerry Wood 20-strikeout game, by some standards one of the best-pitched games ever.
That may be mine, too, and it is probably the only halfway-good sports story I have. Well, that and being at Kenny Holtzman's no hitter against a Braves team that included Hank Aaron with brother Ed's little league team in 1969, when I was happily ignorant of the doom awaiting those Cubs. But this is the only one that I got paid for.
A tax client had business with an Iowa Cubs executive at his offices at Principal Park, Home of the I-Cubs. Kerry Wood's promotion from Iowa to Chicago was still pretty recent news. I was there that day to deal with any tax issues that might come up. One of the office ladies started popping her head in during the meeting to say that "Kerry" (no last name required) already had some absurd number of strikeouts in the 5th inning. She kept popping in with updates as the business conversation wound down, and soon we were all camped in front of the T.V., watching Kerry mow down Astros at an absurd pace. The I-Cubs people told Kerry stories, none of which I can remember, but it was still very cool.
History was made, and sadly unmade as injuries late hampered what seemed at the time to be a sure Hall-of-Fame career. And I was at the ballpark for it. OK, not the right ballpark, but it was still pretty cool to watch it with people who knew him and saw him come up. And until the business part was over, it was even paying work for me.
