No Hitter!

Checking in on the Cub game last night on my cell phone, I noticed in the 5th inning that the other team, Houston, had no hits through 5 innings. I kept checking in, and turned on the radio in the 7th when there were still no hits. ESPN finally switched from the Evil Sox to watch the last half inning, when Carlos Zambrano took out the last three Astros to give the Cubs their first no-hitter since 1972. Rob and I got excited, earning us puzzled looks from Dan and Vickie.

It was a strange game. It was supposed to be in Houston, but they had to move the game because Houston is still closed down from the weekend hurricane. Houston wouldn't play at the Cubs home, so they played in "neutral" Milwaukee, in a staduium full of Cubs fans who made the 1-hour drive.

I actually saw a Cub no-hitter once in person. The paper listed the Cubs no hitters since 1960 this morning, and one of them was a Ken Holtzman 3-0 no hitter of Atlanta in August, 1969. I'm pretty sure that's the one I saw; that was the Atlanta team of Hank Aaron, so it was a real accomplishment. It was a little league outing, and both of my brothers were also there.

Of course, the Cubs went on to break all of our hearts later that summer, blowing a nine-game lead to the still despised Mets. Lets have none of that nonsense this year!

Go Cubs!
