Trinity Supper Club

Twice each year we help to serve dinner at the "Trinity Supper Club" in the basement of a run-down inner city church. Until this year either Vickie or I would take Dan to help out. This year Dan had to be at the homecoming football game early with the marching band, so Bobby got his first chance to help out.

The food is cooked at other churches - in this case our old church, First Methodist. We now go to another church with more kids, but it's nice to see people from the old church. Here we wait for the food to arrive.

Once the people start coming it gets very busy. There was a line of about 20 people when we started serving, but more came quickly. We ended up serving around 100 people.

Many of the customers are kids from the inner city school across the street who show up with parents, who are working or otherwise our of touch with the kids. Some have already developed the hard shell of an inner-city kid, and others are heartbreakingly cute. It's nice to see them get a good meal.

Here are the servers after the customers* have been fed. Bobby, Leslie, Lu and Shirley. Bobby handed out 128 sugar cookies. I poured uncounted cups of milk and juice.

Shirley is the real hero of the operation; she always cooks and delivers the food, and somehow always brings enough that many plates of leftovers go home with the customers.

*I call them customers, but nobody pays for the food - it is all offered free to all comers - even the guy with the $80 cell-phone earpiece who was about 50 lbs overweight and looked like he had just got home from work. If you can afford a cell phone, should you be eating food meant for the needy? I would think at least you could put your fancy cell phone accessories in your pocket...

Afterwards Bobby tried on the pulpit in the church upstairs for size. Preacher Bobby, all fire and brimstone!
