Last weekend before school

Don's memorial service was Saturday. It was a small, nice service, held in the same room where Don and Dorothy had their wedding reception. A few church people who had gotten to know Don talked about him - it sounds like he was as outspoken at a bible study as he was elsewhere.

Vickie and I went with Don's daughters to Dorothy's apartment afterwards to go through Don's records - a tedious process. Not because the records weren't organized - they were meticulous - but because he kept so much stuff. We found an inventory of his Minnesota possessions, complete with date and place of purchase and cost ("Outdoor Thermometer, 6/23/78. L&M Hardware, $8.73). We needed duplicates of a few things, so I was glad of the chance to go to the office and make copies.

Dorothy stayed with us Saturday night. Sunday's highlight was a cookout for families who had manned the concession stands at some Iowa Cubs games this summer to help raise funds for next summer's church youth trip to England.

It worked well - Bobby hung out with his friends, savoring a rare can of pop, which he doesn't get at our house:

Dan helped organize an impromptu Frisbee event:

We drove home afterwards in the new car. The roof opens, and it does funky things to our hair:

The boys return to school Wednesday. Where did summer go?

Good hair-do there Joe. It doesn't make you look insane at all. No really.
