The computer is back!

The big computer came back from Gateway yesterday. It turns on, but it is now a blank slate. It had three years worth of software, patches, etc. Now I have to install everything and rebuild the home network. I have to decide how much to restore from backup and how much to re-install. I could just "ghost" the whole hard drive, but that would also restore three years of stuff I probably shouldn't have installed and all the kludgy background applications added by three years of careless web browsing.

It's a lot of work. The computer still meets our needs, but technology moves so fast. The 3 year-old Gateway seems in some ways the computer equivalent of my niece's 1965(?) Rambler:

My first car was very similar, a 65 Rambler Ambassador, but with much more in the way of rust and bondo. That's sort of how a 3 year-old computer feels. I think I will restore programs selectively instead of "Ghosting" the whole thing, if I can, but that will be a big weekend project, and I think I will get a lot of pressure to plant tomatoes instead...

(didn't spell check the first one)
anyway . . . If you don't have acres of tomatoes to plant out, get it out of the way so you can sit hassle free in front of the computer. I plant a grand total of 2 each year so that I am not overcome with tomato bounty at the end of the summer
