Setback in the garden
While we were at the Iowa State Fair yesterday on the east side of town, about 10 miles east of our house, it rained pretty hard. I was happy - no need to water the garden!
That's for sure. We got 3.2 inches of rain. And enough large hail to make watering much of the garden pointless the rest of the season. Some plants survived, and some may bounce back, but a fair amount is just wiped out. So, the damage. Double=lick on images to see larger versions.
Worst first: the squash bed.

I hold out hopes for the carrots, beans, cukes, and okra, but not high hopes. I haven't seen any garden books that recommend battering plants until most of the leaves are gone, so I don't think the hailstorm is likely to actually help.
The lettuce/radish bed did OK, mostly, I think, because it was covered with a wire cage. So, salads.
Vickie's beautiful flowers did not take it well.

So that's two gardens in three years trashed by freak August storms. I wonder what I can still plant in late August.
